Redeye Email Update - January 2010

Twitter - http://twitter.com/RedeyeNetwork

*****

Welcome to the first Redeye newsletter of 2010 - and dear readers, I'm afraid this is also my last email update for Redeye (see the kind words below). Redeye have given me special dispensation to write a personal note at the start of this Update so I'd just like to say a big thank you to all our subscribers for your attendance and involvement with Redeye events over the eight years I've been with the organisation. I've been lucky enough to meet and work with some very talented people since I've been here and am glad to have been part of some great events and projects.

I should also say thanks to everyone who has put up with my ludicrous introductions to these Updates in the last few years - and to the Redeye team for letting me get away with writing copy that sometimes only vaguely connects to the world of photography. I know some of the puns have been very bad and I seem to remember getting Terminator metaphors in too recently. Sorry about that.

Best of luck to you all with your creative endeavours - Redeye has lots of exciting things planned this year, so do keep watching your inboxes for future Updates. And so for the final time - pour yourself a wee dram, stick the kids / workmates on mute and settle down for a quiet read...

REDEYE NEWS AND EVENTS

STAFF CHANGES AT REDEYE

We're delighted to let you know that we've made two new appointments at Redeye.

Alex Hodby is taking over this month as office administrator. She replaces Richard Evans, who after more than eight years of sterling service is taking the opportunity to expand his other role as Creative Industries Coordinator at Trafford Council, and also devote more time to writing (he's working on his fourth novel). Many of you will have met Richard and experienced his unfailingly professional, polite, humorous and unflappable manner. We're sure you'll join us in wishing him all the best for the future.

Alex has recently moved to Manchester from Newcastle, where she ran the collaborative studio Platform Projects. Before that she was a curator at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. You can contact her direct on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

We've also appointed Petra Hoschtitzky on a short-term research and development contract. Petra is also special projects co-ordinator at Blank Media Collective, works as an independent designer-maker, and previously worked at Sotheby's and Christie's in London. Petra can be contacted at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

SEMINAR - CONFLICT AND THE CAMERA: THE FUTURE OF WAR PHOTOGRAPHY

Redeye is very pleased to present this special event with Imperial War Museum North from 1pm to 6pm on 17th April 2010, discussing the current state and future prospects for war and conflict photography.

The event is part of a season connected with the major Don McCullin exhibition at IWMN from Feb 6th.

Increasingly, restrictions are being placed on the way wars and their effects are photographed. Embedding photographers with the military increases access but at the cost of neutrality, though photographers do what they can to remain unbiased. NGOs commission their own photography, also from a particular perspective. Newspapers, looking at cost-cutting, are reducing long-term commissions. Amateurs and aspiring professionals have increasing outlets via the internet, but with little chance of earning income, and at risk to themselves. Are we in danger of losing photography of key events of our history?

Photographers Simon Norfolk and Sean Sutton will deliver presentations showing their work and explaining their perspective on this subject, and then join a debate with Jon Levy (Foto8 and of Host Gallery) and David Campbell of Durham University, chaired by Paul Herrmann of Redeye to consider the issues around this fascinating subject.

Tickets are priced at £8 (full) & £6 (concessions) and will be available from Friday 22nd January 2010 from Quaytickets on 0843 208 0500 or at www.quaytickets.com.
